A Typical Day
|
This was a four month long, solo project. I was given a pre-made template to use - The PurdueRPGTemplate. Other than that, the only constraints were that there had to be some kind of environmental damage and combat. |
The game development document was not actually the starting place for this project. Instead, I browsed through the Unreal Marketplace, looking for any assets that sparked my imagination. Only after that did I start on the game development document, noting down my ideas for the game.
Game Overview
It is a typical day in retail. After arriving at the megastore, you must dodge the cars driving around the parking lot, for they won't stop just because you're walking. Once inside, you clock in and make your way to your assigned register.
Most customers are pleasant. They chat idly by as their items are scanned. However, there are unruly customers as well. These customers demand unreasonable things. Since they won't listen to reason, there's only one thing you can do - fight them.

Overhead Maps
The outdoor map shows the rough locations of the megastore, how the parking lot is laid out, and where the player starts in relationship to the rest of the map. Parked cars are intended to be an obstacle so that the player cannot simply walk through it in safety.
The indoor map shows the rough layout of the inside of the shopping area. The back room is a maze, with the time clock in the furthest corner away from the employee door. Registers are to the right of the door while products customers can by are, for the most part, on the left.
Below is the entirety of the game development document.

The whitebox map was its own map this time around. It shows the first design of the level, before assets were added. Some UI and the character model are updated as this map is in the same file as the finished maps, but it is otherwise untouched. Below is both a video walkthrough of the whitebox level, as well as a slideshow of screenshots from the level.
